POVERTY RELIEF

POVERTY RELIEF QUARTERLY REPORT. MARCH 2007.

INTRODUCTION

The Eastern Cape Parks (ECP) was appointed by the Department of Environment and Tourism (DEAT) to implement some of its Social Responsibility projects that form part of the Expanded Public Works Programme. This programme is a government intervention to combat unemployment and poverty. The Social Responsibility Projects should be viewed as short to medium measures towards mitigating poverty and unemployment through the provision of short term income.

The second contribution of these projects is a medium to long term benefit of skills development and capacity building, which should culminate in beneficiaries being in a position to be either employable or able to make a living from skills developed during their tenure with the projects. Projects implemented through DEAT focus on improving the environment and promoting tourism. They are classified in three categories namely, infrastructure, livelihood and environment.

The ECP is implementing projects in the Silaka, Mkhambathi, Hluleka and Great Fish River Nature Reserves. The total budget for phase one is R36m. Another grant worth R15m was approved for phase two.
