Biodiversity Conservation: The Science Management Interface

VENUE AND DATE
The Southern African Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA) is inviting all members of the association, wildlife managers, scientists and decision-makers in the field of wildlife management and natural resource conservation to attend this year’s conference at Mpekweni Beach Resort from 16 to 19 September 2008.
The resort is 200km or approximately two hours drive from Port-Elizabeth, 90 km or 50 minutes from East London on the main coastal road (R72) and 38 km or 15 minutes from Port Alfred. Mpekweni Beach resort is on the waters edge and is surrounded by white sand dunes, a secluded beach and tranquil lagoon.
THEME AND SUB THEMES
The main theme is: “Biodiversity Conservation: The Science Management Interface.”
The following focus areas can serve as guidelines for submissions of papers and posters:
• Implementing science
• Adaptive management
• Managing and monitoring biodiversity
• Prioritising threats
• Freshwater and marine ecology and management
• Restoration ecology
• Historical wildlife distribution and conservation management
• Communities and conservation
Contributions will be grouped into sub-themes when we have received all the paper topics.
CALL FOR PAPERS / POSTERS
Paper contributions in the form of 15 min. presentation and 5 min. questions/discussion, using the main theme and focus areas as guidelines, are welcome. Once the titles are submitted sub-themes will be finalised. We would like to encourage submissions from both scientists/researchers and wildlife managers.
Posters: There will not be formal presentations of posters, but the programme will make allowance for a poster session for each author to discuss the poster and answer questions.
Presenters using PowerPoint will be asked to send a CD with a copy of the presentation to the secretariat before the symposium if possible, but should also bring copies of their presentations to the symposium on CD / flash disk drives. Guidelines will be sent to presenters.
Deadlines:
Paper and Poster Titles: Papers/Poster titles should reach Elma Marais by 31 May 2008, in order to compile a provisional programme for the second announcement.
Abstracts: A short abstract for both papers and posters (about 300 - 350 words) should reach Elma by email before or on 30 June 2008 for inclusion in the programme.
