The primary purpose of the Dwesa reserve is the conservation of the unique biodiversity of the coastal forests, the southern sourveld grassland type and the Marine Protected Area. It also provides a critical habitat to the survival of a number of collapsed fish stocks.
Dwesa is the ideal destination for the person who wants to spend a holiday in pristine nature away from the madding crowds. You have the option to stay in a wooden chalet sleeping four people, with gas fridges and stoves. Or you can camp or caravan on the beautiful natural spaces provided for that purpose. Neat ablution blocks cater for your needs.
As part of your activities, you can go with a community guide on walks, 4x2 and 4x4 trips (own vehicle) or maybe even organise a boat trip over the Mbashe river to Cwebe and a meal or a drink in the Haven Hotel.
A wonderful, clean and desolate beach awaits you if you want to work on a great tan or just take a nap under your umbrella.
Dwesa is bordered on the one side by the Indian Ocean and on the other by rugged grasslands of the former Transkei. The bird life in this 3900-ha reserve includes rarities such as the Narina Trogan and Mangrove Kingfisher.
Dwesa also have a number of introduced game species, including Red Hartebeest. Crocodiles have been re-introduced to the rivers and Buffalo, Eland and Warthog once again roam the grasslands and the forest fringes.
