OVERVIEW • MPOFU NATURE RESERVE

About Mpofu Nature Reserve

The purpose of Mpofu Nature Reserve is to conserve and protect the diversity of habitats and associated fauna present and to conserve the distinctive landscape of Mpofu, with a view to incorporating additional areas into the reserve where possible.

Mpofu offers the nature tourist the choice of four different accommodations. The lodges are renovated old farm houses and the trail hut was built for the purpose of providing accommodation for hikers. The lodges also offers a live-on-the-premises housekeeper who will spoil any housewife who wants a rest from her daily housekeeping tasks.

Mpofu Lodge, with a 3 star grading, is very spacious and is ideal for larger family groups and smaller business groups who needs to work in a quiet and natural setting. Intloni Lodge and Mpunzi Lodge can accommodate eight peope each. Both in wonderful natural settings - just the place to have your family holiday or group breakaway.

Mpofu Nature Reserve is situated approximately 25 km northwest of Fort Beaufort and 20 kilometers west of Balfour. It lies on the escarpment and lower valleys of the Katberg Mountains and covers 7500ha with altitudes varying from 550m to 1384m.

The reserve was established in 1985 on land purchased from families with roots in 1820 Settler history. Their classic East Cape homes have been converted into colonial lodges. The reserve is close to the site of Chief Maqoma's Kraal, the exact location being a closely guarded secret. The legendary Blinkwater Monster is also reputed to visit the reserve regularly, so beware.

The steep terrain and varied rainfall of the Mpofu Nature Reserve provides a rich and diverse habitat, which supports an amazing variety of animal and plant communities.
